Summer Holiday Project 2023
Thu 20 Jul 2023The Lanes Summer Project
This year, we are running a summer project from reception to Y6. We are encouraging all children to spend more time outdoors and to explore our local area. Please see attached the National Trust list of 50 things to do before you are 11 ¾. When we return to school after summer, we would love the children to bring in a few pictures of them taking part in some of the activities from the list to show as part of show and tell in their new class.

RAISING ASPIRATIONS FORTNIGHT
Fri 21 Apr 2023Dear Parents/Carers,
After the success of last year, The Lanes Primary School will be holding Raising Aspirations fortnight again across school this half term. The children will have the chance to meet a wide range of professionals and learn about the values, characteristics and skills required to succeed. We are also hoping that this fortnight will encourage the children to think about how they will contribute to their local and wider community when they are older.
We need YOUR experience! We are looking for a variety of people interested in spending a couple of hours talking to small groups of children about their career, educational routes or experiences. Many of our children are unaware of the career opportunities and pathways available to them. This is a fantastic way to provide them with first-hand knowledge of potential career paths and educational routes.
To that end, we are seeking parents/volunteers representing a wide range of careers who would be able and willing to be our presenters on one of the following dates below. Please note you can suggest family members or friends as volunteers. Presenters will need to be available from 1:30pm until 3pm on the day and may bring equipment, uniform or examples of their work, though this is not necessary. The children will have the chance to ask questions and learn more about the different careers available in a carousel style format.
If you or somebody you know is able to offer their time for one or more of the following dates, please let us know by completing the form via this link https://forms.office.com/e/6Wu9bpDc0c
Below are the dates for each year group – you do not necessarily have to attend the same session as your child’s year group.
Reception - Thurs 25th May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 1 -Thurs 25th May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 2 - Weds 17th May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 3 - Mon 15th May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 4 - Tues 16th May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 5 - Mon 22nd May 1.30pm – 3pm
Year 6 - Tues 23rd May 1.30pm – 3pm
We will reply by email to any volunteers on or before 8th May 2023.
We really hope that this fortnight will give our children an understanding of what they could aspire to in years to come, both in terms of further education and future careers, and that they will go on to realise their full potential and fulfil their aspirations for the future.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to email or pop into the office.
Thank you in advance for your support and involvement.
Yours sincerely,
The RSHE team -
THANK YOU MESSAGE FROM OPERATION ORPHAN
Sun 19 Mar 2023Hello,
I hope you are all doing well!
We have received your incredibly generous donation of £704.62 for our appeal to help those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey & Syria. On behalf of everyone here at Operation Orphan, thank you so much to all of those involved in this fundraiser! We are so appreciative of The Lanes Primary School’s continued support. As all of our admin costs are underwritten, every penny you all have raised will go to helping those affected by the earthquakes.
This week, we have sent a second deployment of our Crisis Response Team back into Hatay, Turkey. The team is there supporting children orphaned or made vulnerable by the earthquakes. On CRT’s first deployment to Hatay, they partnered with Turkish social services and together, recovered and helped dozens of families by providing practical aid like toiletries, cleaning products, tents, water filters, funds, etc. The team has also visited several IDP camps where they passed out over 250 of our beautiful handmade blankets to children; they also played games like rounders and football with them. It is incredibly important to us that we bring these children, who have undergone incredibly traumatic events, a sense of normalcy as it helps them to cope and begin to process their experiences. The team will be in Turkey for the next week continuing to identify, make safe, and keep safe children affected by these disasters.
We could not help these children and families without our amazing supporters, like yourselves. Thank you all so much incredibly much!
Best Wishes, Emma

FUNDRAISING FOR VICTIMS OF TURKEY/SYRIA EARTHQUAKE
Tue 21 Feb 2023Dear Parents/Carers
We have been talking to the children about the events in Turkey and Syria and the devastation caused by the huge earthquake and they are really keen to help in some way. Therefore, we have once again teamed up with the local charity Operation Orphan. They already have one crisis team on the ground helping children and families and they are hoping to send another team out soon. They have advised that the best way to help at the moment is by asking for monetary donations. They do not take any funding to run the charity but every single penny raised enables them to directly support those in need. The children have decided that this Friday (24th February) we have a non-uniform day in school to support this charity. If you would like to make a small donation this can be brought to school with your child. If you feel that you would like to donate more you can do so by sending some direct to Operation Orphan via this link https://operationorphan.enthuse.com/CRT-Turkey-2023#!/ Thank you for your support. We will continue to be in contact with Operation Orphan and hope that they will come and share their experiences with us at some point. In the meantime please see below the latest update from Operation Orphan regarding the disaster:
The team visited lots of families who were isolated and not connected to the main response. These people have all had their homes destroyed. Twenty children (aged from 40 days to 17 years) who lost one or both parents were located and made safe. One six-year-old was still living in a car but now they have a large tent they can live in until a more permanent solution can be established. The new born baby was living in a make shift tent. Mum died going into the house for a blanket. We are glad to have been able to help them and bring some stability. We also visited three IDP camps and gave 260 hand crafted blankets directly to orphaned or displaced children. Large family tents, hand knitted blankets, emergency foil blankets, toys, hygiene products, generator, water filtration system, lighting, food and emergency cash were given to those in need, depending on their personal situation. The team also played lots of games and brought some fun as a way to help children begin to deal with the trauma. We completed visiting all the children on our lists. These lists were compiled by local people and sent to us by a lady from the region who is now living in the UK. Every referral was accurate. There are many more names of children that meet our criteria coming in and funding permitting, a follow up team is ready to be sent. Whilst the majority of orphans have been found by the state, and are now safe in the care system, there are so many of these children living in between the rubble and are unknown. People are so traumatised they don’t want to leave their homes and are reluctant to move to the many organised camps being set up. The scale of the disaster in this region is beyond imagination. The areas we visited are beyond recognition and if we have sufficient funding we would like to send a second team as soon as possible to help support children long term.
You can follow the progress of the team on Operation Orphan website and their Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/OperationOrphan

WORLD BOOK DAY
Tue 21 Feb 2023Dear Parents and Carers,
On Thursday 2nd March, it’s World Book Day! This year, we will be inviting all of the children to dress up as their favourite book characters and we will spend the day celebrating our love of reading.
If finding a World Book Day costume is proving to be difficult, the children can also design and make their very own World Book Day-inspired hat instead.
Throughout the day, your child will take part in lots of fun activities with their friends and teachers, including an online assembly led by Inspire who run Nottinghamshire County Council libraries.
We will also be giving out a World Book Day token to the children to spend at most book shops.
Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions about World Book Day or reading in general at The Lanes.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Leah Wignell

STREP A INFORMATION
Thu 08 Dec 2022Good morning
Please find below information from the DFE regarding Strep A
Key messages for parents
1. Group A strep (GAS) is a common bacteria which causes a range of infections, including scarlet fever. These infections are usually mild. GAS is spread by close contact with an infected person and can be passed on through coughs and sneezes or from a wound. Invasive group A strep (iGAS) is a rare infection when the bacteria gets into parts of the body where it can cause more serious disease, like the lungs or bloodstream.
2. There are currently higher than seasonal expected levels of scarlet fever. The early symptoms of scarlet fever include sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting followed by a characteristic red, pinhead rash giving the skin a sandpaper-like texture. For more information and advice, please see: Scarlet fever - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
3. To help reduce all infections, good hand and respiratory hygiene are important, including:
• washing hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap
• catching coughs and sneezes using tissues – catch it, bin it, kill it
• keeping away from others when feeling unwell.
4. As a parent, if you feel that your child seems seriously unwell, you should trust your own judgement. Contact NHS 111 or your GP if:
• your child has a sore throat, fever, chills or muscle aches, but they are getting worse
• your child is eating much less than normal
• you child shows signs of dehydration
• your child has a temperature of 39oC or higher.
5. Call 999 or go to A&E if:
• your child is having difficulty breathing – you may notice grunting noises or their tummy sucking under their ribs
• there are pauses when your child breathes
• your child’s skin, tongue or lips are blue
• your child is floppy and will not wake up or stay awake.

CHILDREN IN NEED - FRI 18 NOV
Fri 11 Nov 2022A Message from the School Council – November 2022
Readathon Sponsorship
First of all we would like to say a HUGE thank you for your support with our Readathon over half term. So far we have raised £3000 which is amazing. If you have not sent your money in yet please send it into the office or pay it into Squid. We are also using the £5000 that Noah won when he designed a Christmas card for Amazon last year – he has particularly requested some new football goals!
We have had a meeting this half term and we have taken ideas from the children about how they would like to develop the playgrounds and improve playtimes. We are really excited to start planning our project.
Children in Need
The School Council are leading this year’s charity effort for Children in Need. This is on Friday November 18th.
Please could everyone come to school dressed in something spotty or stripy on the day. Children can also wear Pudsey headbands, badges, T shirts if they would like to. In school we will be talking about charity and how we can help people who are less fortunate than us and who may need support. Please bring £1 into school to go towards the charity – you can give this to the teacher when you come into school or alternatively you can make a donation online via sQuid –Children In Need 2022 Donations
We would also like to run a cake sale. There will be a stall on the playground at Meadow Lane (in the hall if it is raining), and another one in the hall at Cator Lane at pick up time on Friday afternoon. We will be asking for donations of cakes and biscuits please and these can be dropped into school any time next week. The more cakes we get the more money we will raise.
We really hope that you will support us with our Children in Need fundraising – let’s see how much we can raise!

School Council Fundraising Project 2022-23
Wed 12 Oct 2022School Council have decided on their project for this year. We would like to raise some money to update the playgrounds and outdoor learning areas in school. There is already some money in the school budget but we will need to raise some extra money to enable us to do what we want to do. We are excited to begin planning the developments on both sites.
To start our fundraising efforts, we would like to do the following:
On Thursday 13th October you can come to school in non-uniform. We are asking for a £1.00 donation for this. The money should be brought to school on Thursday morning and will be collected in the school offices.
Over half term we would like the children to do a sponsored Readathon. You need to read every day for at least 14 days of the half term holiday. You can read a paragraph a day, a page a day, a chapter or even a whole book, it's completely up to you. You can read whatever you like from comics to classics or even have a story read to you – anything goes.
We would love to see the evidence of the Readathon too. You could send in a photograph of your reading adventure (maybe reading in an unusual place or with a favourite person), draw a picture about your favourite book or write a book review. We will display all of this in school along with the running total for our fundraising appeal. Photos can be emailed to office@thelanes.notts.sch.uk or you can bring them in when we return after half-term.
It would be great if everyone gets involved in our Readathon. There is a sponsor form attached to this letter so that you can persuade as many people as you can to sponsor you.
Sponsorship donations can be brought to school or paid on Squid through the ‘Trips and Offers’ purse.
